A One Day Workshop on Goods and Service Tax (GST) was conducted by the Department of Commerce (Aided) on 8th April 2024 from 9.30 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. in ICT Hall IV for III B.Com students. Mr. Mohana Harish, Internal auditor and Financial Trainer, Mohana Harish Associates, Madurai was the Resource Person. Mr. Mohana Harish started his presentation by briefed the history of GST, reasons for introduction of GST, multiple taxation before pre-GST period, GST council, and the concept of GST. The workshop was activity based and the resource person followed role play method and gave various examples to explain types of GST, GST registration, composite scheme, input tax credit, and tax rates for various goods and services with amendments and impact. 60 students of III B.Com (Aided & Unaided) attended the workshop and gained practical knowledge about GST besides learning the impact of GST on business and consumers.

Industrial visit to Maris Associates Private Limited, Thoothukudi
Industrial visit to Maris Associates Private Limited, Thoothukudi was arranged by the Department of Commerce (Aided) on 2nd April 2024. Two faculty of the Commerce Department Dr. S. Umamageswari and Dr. M. Muthulakshmi accompanied 55 students of III B.Com to the industry. Students and the faculty reached the factory at 10.00 a.m. Madathur in Thoothukudi Mobile phones were not permitted inside the factory for the students and faculty. The students and the faculty were taken to the Conference Hall of the factory where they were given a detailed presentation about the history of Maris Associates Private Limited, products offered by them, manufacturing process, raw materials required for manufacturing poly bags, quality control, in-plant inspection, packing, usage of by-product, central godown, despatch of the finished product, and export of poly bags to various countries. The presentation was given by Mr.Joyson, Human Resource Manager of Maris Associates Private Limited. This presentation session was followed by the physical visit of students and faculty to various units in the factory. Students were divided into 4 teams and each team was assisted by Production Officers who gave a detailed explanation about the processes and operations that take place in all the units of the factory. The industrial visit was over by 1.15 p.m. and the students and the faculty reached the College 1.30 p.m. The industrial visit served as an experiential learning to both the students and the faculty. Meanwhile the faculty got a favourable response from the industry regarding placements and internships for students which would be beneficial for their career advancement.
Guest lecture on the topic “Journey of Successful Entrepreneur” on 25th March, 2023
Department of Commerce (Aided) in association with Entrepreneurship Development Cell & Institution’s Innovation Council conducted a guest lecture on the topic “Journey of Successful Entrepreneur” on 25th March in ICT Hall IV at 11.15 a.m. for II B.Com and III B.Com students. Mrs. Devi Loganathan, Proprietor, Soorya Kudumbam Food Products, Thoothukudi was the Guest Speaker. Mrs. Devi started her lecture by highlighting the factors that motivated her to become an entrepreneur and the business she started initially. She also informed the hardships face by her and how she overcame them to achieve success. The guest speaker listed out the nutritious products manufactured by her with the support of few labourers and family members. She insisted the students to develop self-confidence and be courageous to face failures as failures are the stepping stones to success. Students were advised to be creative and move further by taking their business to the next level and should think “What Next?”. 117 students of II B.Com and III B.Com attended the programme which was very motivational and thought provoking.
Webinar on the topic “Internet & Its Applications” on 12th March 2024
Department of Commerce (Aided) conducted a Webinar on the topic “Internet & Its Applications” for I B.Com students on 12th March 2024 from 7.00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m. in Google Meet. Mrs. S. Vidvaja B.E CSE, Associate Consultant, M/S, Digital.ai, Software Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore was the Resource Person. Mrs. Vidvaja started her presentation by briefing the concepts of internet, intranet, LAN, WWW, search engine, URL, Domain, E-mail, Video conferencing protocols and HTML. She presented the applications of internet in various fields such as business, research, communications, health and medicine, travel, shopping, education, and entertainment. The resource person trained the students as to how to browse a study material, and how to make payment in online shopping. 55 students of I B.Com attended the programme which was a good learning experience. Besides learning the basic concepts of internet and its services, the students also learnt to access digital library, to make online payments, to do online shopping and so on.
Awareness and Training Program on the topic “Electronic Banking Awareness and Training Program (E-BAAT)” on 05.03.2024
Department of Commerce (Aided & Unaided) in association with Reserve Bank of India, Chennai organized an Awareness and Training Program on the topic “Electronic Banking Awareness and Training Program (E-BAAT)” on 05.03.2024 in the Auditorium from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm. P. Raghavanandham, Manager, V. M. Amaranath, Manager, B. Vigneshwaran, Assistant Manager, Reserve Bank of India, Chennai were the Resource Persons. T. Durairaj, Lead District Manager, S. Ruba, Deputy Manager, Lead Bank Office, State Bank of India, Thoothukudi graced the occasion. Rhe resource person addressed about the Electronic Banking Facilities and, they discussed about the frauds and risk mitigation related information to our students. The students gained awareness about the digital banking like the payment methods such as NEFT, RTGS, IMPS, functions of ATM, precautions to be followed by customers, customer grievances redressal and Do’s & Don’ts for safe and secure electronic banking. Totally 257 students from I M.Com, II M.Com, and III B.Com (Aided, I, II & III Batch) were benefited by this program. The presentation by the resource person was understandable and gave a complete information about digital banking services.

Guest Lecture on “Startups in Tamil Nadu- A Way to Sustainable Development” was conducted on 24th January 2024 in which Dr.M. Muthulakshmi, Vice President, Institution’s Innovation Council, A.P.C. Mahalaxmi College for Women, Thoothukudi addressed the students on the above topic. The main aim of this program is to insight about the startups and their scope in Tamilnadu. Dr. M. Muthulakshmi, Assistant professor of Commerce & Vice President, IIC of A.P.C. Mahalaxmi College for Women, Thoothukudi delivered the speech about the scope of startups in Tamilnadu. The Speaker gave a presentation on startup companies that have emerged in Tamil Nadu recently, the strategies followed by them to achieve success and the initiatives taken by the Central and State Government to promote startups. She insisted the students to think creatively so as to develop innovative ideas to solve pressing daunting problems faced by the society. Totally 53 students participated and got benefitted. The session was highly informative and motivational to students.

Guest Lecture on the topic “Promoting Literacy for a World in Transition: Building Foundation for Sustainable and Peaceful Societies” was organised by the Department of Commerce (Aided) in view of International Literacy Day, the special day programme allotted to the department on 13th September 2023 at 10.30 a.m. in the Auditorium for I, II and III B.Com students. Dr. A.M. Sonal, Assistant Professor of Tamil, St. Mary’s College (Autonomous), Thoothukudi was the Chief Guest for the programme. Dr. Sonal gave a lecture about UNESCO and the importance of literacy, especially computer literacy in a world driven by technology in the name of Artificial Intelligence. She emphasised the fact that moral values should never be compromised in the name of literacy and insisted students that besides being knowledgeable they should also follow ethical values taught by their teachers and parents in order to create a sustainable and peaceful society. 175 students attended the programme and got benefitted. They were made to realise the necessity of education and how to use their education for promoting a peaceful environment.
Career Counselling Programme on Chartered Accountancy on 8th September 2023
Department of Commerce (Aided) conducted a Career Counselling Programme on Chartered Accountancy for II B.Com students (Aided & Unaided) on 8th September 2023 at 10.00 a.m. in ICT Hall II. Mr. Shunmugaraj, Chartered Accountant and Proprietor, M/S. Shunmugaraj Associates, Thoothukudi was the Resource Person for the programme. He gave an informative lecture about registration process for CA, the age limit, the importance, and impact of CA, ICAI, career options available after completing CA, roles of a chartered accountant, the levels a student should pass through to become a CA, fees, and examination pattern. The resource person finally, insisted the students that hard work with dedication shall enable them to become chartered accountants. 63 students of II B.Com (Aided) attended the programme and got motivated. PPT containing details about CA course given by the Resource Person was posted in the students whatsapp group.
Lecture on “Funding opportunities for Startups on 29.08.2023
The Lecture on “Funding opportunities for Startups” was Conducted by the department in collaboration with Institutions Innovation Council (IIC). on 29.08.2023 at the Conference Hall in the which Dr. M.Muthulakshmi, Vice President – IIC, Assistant Professor of Commerce, A.P.C. Mahalaxmi College for Women, Thoothukudi was the resource Person. She delivered the speech about the funding opportunities for startups. She highlighted the various sources of funds available for the startups. The programme was more useful to the students those who are having entrepreneurial thought, but not having any owned source of funds or non-availability of funds to start or run the startups. Totally 60 students were participated in the Programme and got benefited.
Alumnae Meet on 15th August 2023
Department of Commerce (Aided) conducted Alumnae Meet on 15th August 2023 at 10.00 a,m in Hall Number SR 21 from 10.00 a.m to 12.30 p.m .Ms. R. Pon Indra B.Com., CA (Inter) and alumna of our college (2021-2022 batch) was the Chief Guest. The programme started with introducing the chief guest to the alumna and by honouring her with a Memento. Ms. Pon Indra gave a self-introduction about herself and how she learnt and acquired knowledge from each faculty. She advised the students to learn both soft and technical skills and recollected her memories. 5 alumnae from various batches attended the programme. Games were conducted to entertain them. Gifts were given to all the alumnae as a token of affection. Refreshment was given to alumnae and volunteers. Feedback was collected from the alumnae. Alumnae were requested to have a good bonding with the institution which played a vital role to achieve a holistic development.
Seminar on “Innovations & IPR on 31st July, 2023
Seminar on “Innovations & IPR” was organised by the Department of Commerce (Aided) in association with Entrepreneurship Development Cell on 31st July at 1.15 p.m. in the Conference Hall for II B.Com and III B.Com. Dr. S. Gayathri, Head of the Department of Business Administration and Coordinator of Entrepreneurship Development Cell, St. Mary’s College, Thoothukudi was the Resource Person. Dr. Gayathri started her presentation by explaining the meaning of invention and innovation with lots of examples, and how to protect them by means of IPR. She explained each type of IPR and made the session very informative and interactive. 60 students of II B.Com and 53 students of III B.Com attended the session and obtained information about various innovations, inventions, and Intellectual Property Rights.
Workshop on the topic “Canva for Beginners on 21st July 2023
Workshop on the topic “Canva for Beginners” was organised by the Department of Commerce (Aided) on 21st July 2023 for III B.Com students in the UG Computer Science Lab at 1.15 p.m. Mrs. J. Arockia Jeyanthi, Assistant Professor of Computer Science of our College and NIIT certified trainer was the Resource person. Mrs. Arockia Jeyanthi started the training session by giving a brief introduction about Canva software and its applications. Then she gave hands on training to the students as to how to download the Canva software, about paid versions, free versions, menu bar, side panel, and work space. She then trained the students on creating invitation, presentation, and videos and explained various features that can be used while using Canva. She also explained the method of downloading, naming the presentation, saving, and sharing the file. 54 students of III B.Com (Aided) attended the programme and they learnt about designing an invitation card, creating presentations and videos which would be useful for their academics.
